Named for Richard Migliore, proceeds from the sale of the celebrity sandwich will benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund and the Thoroughbred Retirement Fund
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Cardona’s Market today unveiled a tasteful fundraiser in celebration of retired jockey and Saratoga Live TV personality Richard Migliore who frequented the Winner’s Circle throughout his career spanning nearly three decades. Migliore, known to fans as “The Mig,” was on hand Friday morning for the ceremonial first bite at Cardona’s Saratoga Market.
The event took place on the eve of the 39th running of the Grade 1, $500,000 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga Race Course, a race named in honor of the fan-favorite thoroughbred with whom Migliore is most often associated.
Cardona’s will donate a total of $2,500, or $1,250 each, to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) and Thoroughbred Retirement Fund (TRF) from the sale of the celebrity sandwich now through Labor Day.
The Mig sandwich layers fresh mozzarella, Genoa salami, rosemary ham, prosciutto, hot pepper spread, balsamic glaze, roasted red peppers, lettuce and tomato on a classic Cardona’s Italian sub roll. It will be available at the family-owned Italian market’s Albany, Latham and Saratoga Springs locations.
“I feel especially honored to have a Cardona’s sub named after me,” said Migliore. “I am a huge fan of Cardona’s and I always look forward to enjoying their incredible menu anytime I’m in the Capital District. I want to thank Cardona’s for making this sandwich double as a fundraiser for two charities that mean the world to me.”
Migliore’s 29-year racing career boasted 4,450 wins, including 362 stakes and 25 Grade 1 events. He was aboard Fourstardave for the thoroughbred’s final win at Saratoga in 1994.
Migliore’s love for the sport has kept him close at hand as a television analyst for the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) and as an ambassador for horse racing and thoroughbred ownership.
The New York-bred Fourstardave, also known as the Sultan of Saratoga, won a race at Saratoga for eight consecutive years from 1987 to 1994, setting a record that is unlikely to ever be broken. NYRA immortalized Fourstardave with an annual race and sports bar in his name. The Fourstardave Handicap, a one-mile turf race for horses aged three and older, this year takes place on Saturday, Aug. 12, while the Fourstardave Sports Bar is one of the track’s most popular hospitality areas.
“As fans and neighbors of Saratoga Race Course, we’re proud to launch this celebrity sandwich fittingly called ‘The Mig’,” said Cardona’s Market Co-Owner Robert Cardona. “We are also proud to support the PDJF and TRF in a city that is synonymous with horse racing. Adding ‘The Mig’ to our roster of celebrity sandwiches is truly gratifying for those of us who have followed his amazing career.”
The Mig sandwich is available at Cardona’s Market locations at 222 Washington Street in Saratoga Springs; 340 Delaware Avenue in Albany; and 9 Cobbee Road in Latham. The Saratoga Springs market is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Albany and Latham markets are open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. All three locations are open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
