Cardona’s Market – the family-owned Italian specialty foods store and catering company serving the Capital Region since 1945 – commemorated the reopening of its updated Saratoga Springs location with a special celebration on Tuesday, July 9 in advance of the area’s upcoming racing and tourist season.
The completion of the expansive renovation project at the 222 Washington Street location included the addition of a 1,400 square-foot, full-service kitchen. As a result, the Saratoga market is now able to feature Cardona’s signature, ready-to-serve hot food items and abundant catering options. Hot food selections comprise Italian favorites such as penne alla vodka; tortellini alfredo; chicken marsala; chicken meatballs; arancini; sausage, peppers and onions; stuffed shells and more.
“We are thrilled to further serve the Saratoga Springs community with an enhanced space that will allow us to expand our menu to provide ready-to-serve hot food with our new full-service kitchen,” said Cardona’s Market Owner August Cardona. “Cardona’s Market prides itself on serving a wide variety of Italian classics, and this expansion has made that mission even more of a reality in our Saratoga Springs location.”
The festivities featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Saratoga Springs Mayor John Safford and Saratoga Live TV personality Richard Migliore, who handed out samples of “The Mig,” the eponymous sandwich that was relaunched as part of Tuesday’s grand reopening. The Mig sandwich – named after the celebrated retired jockey – layers fresh mozzarella, Genoa salami, rosemary ham, prosciutto, hot pepper spread, balsamic glaze, roasted red peppers, lettuce and tomato on a classic Cardona’s Italian sub roll. Partial proceeds from sales of The Mig through Labor Day will benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) and Thoroughbred Retirement Fund (TRF).
The Saratoga market is one of three area locations for Cardona’s, which it acquired alongside the Latham storefront in June 2021 to complement its flagship specialty foods store in Albany.
Since joining the Cardona’s family, the Saratoga Springs market has enhanced its offerings of top-quality products with a unique twist. Three popular sandwiches from the Latham location have been renamed in Saratoga Springs to pay homage to the local community:
- The “Bleu Bison” chicken cutlet sandwich is available as the “Bleu Streak” to reflect the nickname of Saratoga Springs High School;
- The “Cobbee Road” chicken cutlet sandwich is “The Thoroughbred” as an ode to Saratoga’s horse racing heritage, as well as the nickname of nearby Skidmore College;
- The “Frank B” featured sandwich is “The Colonel” in recognition of a longtime loyal customer of the Saratoga Springs market.
Cardona’s Market in Saratoga Springs is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. The market’s expanded menu features an array of made-to-order sandwiches, soups and salads and a variety of hot food options.
