Catholic Charities to commemorate Giving Tuesday by tackling food insecurity in Albany’s South End

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany will partner tomorrow with team members from Coldwell Banker Prime Properties for Giving Tuesday to serve lunch at the St. John’s/St. Ann’s Outreach Center in Albany’s South End.

Giving Tuesday, celebrated annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, is a global generosity movement that encourages people to give back to their community.

In 2023, 21% of residents in the City of Albany reported being food insecure, compared to 10% of New Yorkers as a whole. Food insecurity rates for children were even higher, with one in seven facing hunger across the state.

St. John’s/St. Ann’s Outreach Center has been serving the South End community of Albany since 1976. As a program of Catholic Charities Tri-County Services, the Center provides a soup kitchen on Tuesdays and Saturdays and a food pantry on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The Center’s soup kitchen serves an average of 717 people per month and the food pantry serves an average of 618 people per month. Additional programs provide holiday assistance, weekly fresh produce distribution and GED programs.
