The Wesley Community today announced the retirement of longtime Director of Pharmacy Cliff Van Wagner, who served residents of the 37-acre non-profit senior living campus in Saratoga Springs for the past 48 years.
Van Wagner’s dedication and service dating back to 1977 will be marked by a legacy of altruism and enterprising leadership. Considered a cornerstone of the Pharmacy team who has served with distinction for nearly five decades, Van Wagner has been an integral part of the organization, contributing not only to the success of the Pharmacy Department, but to the growth and development of The Wesley Community as a whole.
“We have been privileged to have Cliff at the helm of the Pharmacy Department, and as a champion of our community, for so many years,” said J. Brian Nealon, CEO of The Wesley Community. “His unwavering dedication, time and significant contributions to the pharmacy and campus overall have been pivotal to our growth as an institution. His larger-than-life presence and compassion have improved the quality of life for the residents we serve. We extend our best wishes to him as he transitions into retirement.”
During his tenure, Van Wagner witnessed firsthand the transformation of The Wesley Community from a single building with 164 residents to a thriving campus with three buildings and 342 licensed beds.
Van Wagner has advanced the continuous improvement of Wesley’s facilities, with his role as construction supervisor for two major building projects: Hathorn, the long-term nursing care facility built in 1994-1995; and Woodlawn Commons which offers independent and assisted living, constructed in 1998-1999. He has overseen countless smaller projects, always ensuring that The Wesley Community remained a safe and welcoming place for residents and staff alike.
Van Wagner, whose impact extends far beyond his role at Wesley, has dedicated himself to the Saratoga Springs community as a volunteer for 45 years, serving on various city committees and as a decades-long active member of the Saratoga Lions Club. His leadership as board member of a number of organizations throughout Saratoga County has made a meaningful difference, including as the former chairman of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
In recognition of his contributions, Van Wagner was awarded the prestigious 2022 Joseph Dalton Award for Community Service, joining a distinguished group of only five recipients to ever receive the honor. Additionally, he has served on the Luther Forest Tech Park Board of Directors and the Red Cross Board, demonstrating his commitment to both local and regional initiatives.
“I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have spent 49 years as the Director of Pharmacy,” said Van Wagner. “Wesley’s motto – ‘provide quality care with compassion, competence and character’ – truly reflects the values of this community. It’s been an honor to be a part of this team, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such a dedicated group of individuals, as well as contribute to the well-being of the greater Saratoga Springs community.”
Van Wagner looks forward to staying busy, remaining an active member of the Saratoga Springs community, and attending his grandson’s sporting events. He is excited to start traveling with his wife, and hunting, fishing, and playing poker with his six best friends. Van Wagner’s passion for service and leadership continues to inspire those around him. The Wesley Community has been fortunate to have him on staff and credits his longevity and selflessness as part of the driving force that has allowed Wesley to grow as a premier continuum-of-care community.
